BENEFITING: Red Feather Development Group
HOURS PLEDGED: 168
Red Feather Development Group is a very effective, 17-yr old nonprofit that supports the Hopi Tribe and the Northern Cheyenne Tribe by building straw-bale homes on the two reservations. Building a home is a wholly collaborative effort - the family that will live in it works on the home, community members come by on a purely volunteer basis to help out and learn construction skills, and peope from off the reservations stay for 1 or 2 weeks and help build/paint/eat frybread.
I volunteered with them this past September on the Hopi build and helped them finish this house (in the picture on the left). Since I was on the last week of the build, I got to attend the house-warming party, complete with Hopi Country Music band Sunfire. The ultimate goal for Red Feather on the Hopi Reservation is to support and enhance Hopi culture and community by ensuring safe and healthy housing for people on the rez, one house at a time. From a purely selfish perspective, working with other volunteers, Hopi neighbors and Red Feather staff to finish this gorgeous house on some the most beautiful land in the world was a psychiclly refreshing experience. Please help them build another batch of homes!
