I first encountered Sacred Fools when I walked through the doors and got gobsmacked by Padraic Duffy's Tell the Bees (an imprisoned man builds an effigy of his own head into which he then "escapes" pursued by his jailor and two buxom temptresses chasing him across a surreal landscape full of weird characters.) It was by turns poetic, hilarious, confusing, bold and fascinating. I knew instantly that I wanted to be a part of the amazing insanity I witnessed that night. It took 3 years but I made my Fools debut in Doug Clayton's impressively mounted DROOD and I knew I'd found a home.
Since 2007 Sacred Fools has been my artistic home-base and I've had the great fortune to work with amazing artists and see some fantastic performances. It is where I go for inspiration, education and fulfilment. And, in the time I've been a member I've seen the company experience exponential growth in vision and visibility within the theatrical community.
This year we moved quite suddenly from our rag-tag home of 19 years in East Hollywood to a comparatively massive complex of spaces on Santa Monica Blvd in the heart of Hollywood's Theatre Row. We raced against the clock to repair and renovate the stages in order to continue our scheduled season. Then, we leapt, cannon-ball style, into the pool of Hollywood Fringe Fest making a huge splash both hosting and incubating a large number of exciting theatrical experiments.
It's an invigorating time to be a Sacred Fool and I hope that you feel our efforts are worthy of support. Moving and rennovations to the new home did not come cheap and we would be extremely appreciative of any donation you can spare.
Rediscover Creativity wrote -
For 19 years we have been discovering and rediscovering creativity. Just like our membership, our artistic directors are a committee that is nominated and then voted into their position. This means that we have had many opinions on art, many voices channeling our creativity. Our artistic directors receive proposed projects for our stages by our company members, so every member’s own creative outlet is also nourished. This system encourages multitudes of visions and empowers the creativity unfurled in ensemble cultivation. Thank you for valuing creativity in our 20th season!
