FOUND ONLY IN AMERICA, THE RED WOLF IS ON THE BRINK OF EXTINCTION
Red wolves are special. They are the only large predators ever to have been declared extinct in the wild, bred in captivity, and successfully reintroduced to a portion of their former range. Bringing the red wolf back from the brink of extinction has been a pioneering venture, and it has succeeded because of the work of veteran field biologists, captive breeding program specialists and facilities, and dedicated education and outreach organizations like the RED WOLF COALITION. But now, the future of the red wolf is in jeopardy for several reasons. These include (1) the challenge of finding additional reintroduction sites (2) the potential for hybridization with coyotes, and (3) the alarming rise in gunshot mortality which has resulted in the loss of key breeders in the wild. Additionally, the U.S Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) is poised to terminate the Red Wolf Recovery Program (RWRP) pending the findings of yet another “study,” and the agency has suspended all management strategies used to augment the wild population. Moreover, the state of North Carolina has issued a formal resolution to the USFWS requesting that the RWRP be ended and the red wolf declared extinct in the wild – for the second time. It is therefore imperative that the general public throughout the U.S. (a) be informed with current information about the potential loss of “America’s native wolf,” and (b) be engaged in the implications of pending decisions regarding this imperiled animal. The Red Wolf Coalition is the ONLY citizen non-profit working exclusively to ensure the long-term survival of endangered red wolves. Please help us help them.
