As an organization that serves children both globally and locally, the Kiwanis Club of Phoenixville is aiming to impact its hometown youngsters! Through an official partnership with the Phoenixville Jaycees, Kiwanis is dedicated to creating a long- term solution for a present problem; a playground that can be enjoyed by children and adolescents of all-abilities, as well as enable physically challenged parents to interact with their families. The playground will be in the heart of Phoenixville, which is easily accessible from neighboring towns. Kiwanis Club of Phoenixville and Phoenixville Jaycees are committed to creating an environment free of social and physical restrictions for the area's children. To ensure safety, a fence with one entrance/exit, rubber playground base, and a handicap-friendly bathroom will be installed. For families with several children, this playground will mean that their children can finally play together in a safe and nurturing environment. Reeves Park Playground will be free of judgment, restrictions, exclusion, or bullying. The new and improved playground will be installed October 2017, with the support of the Phoenixville area's community. Both Kiwanis Club of Phoenixville and Phoenixville Jaycees have an enormous dedication for those they serve, and the club's wish is for the installation to inspire more businesses and clubs to be accessible to all!
What is an all-abilities playground? An environment free of social and physical restrictions for the area's children. This includes ramps for wheelchair access, accessibility kids on the autism spectrum, and youth with a variety of disabilities. We have a responsibility to ensure inclusion and allowing children to play together, regardless of their abilities.
What age range will this new equipment be for? Ages 2 to 12, as well as disabled parents to participate with their children.
Where will the new equipment go? The old swing set and balance beam will be removed in Reeves Park, and a new swingset and play equipment installed in the 4,000 sq. ft. area.
Who is spearheading this campaign for a more accessible and inclusive playground? Kiwanis Club of Phoenixville and the Phoenixville Jaycees have partnered to make this plan a reality. For more information on these two clubs, please visit www.phoenixvillejaycees.org www.phoenixvillekiwanis.org
How much is the entire project? The playground, shipping, surfacing, fencing, and accessories is budgeted to $300k.
When is the new playground being installed? Our goal is October 2017.
Who will own the playground? The Reeves Park Playground will still be owned by the Phoenixville Borough.
Will there be a fence? Yes! For safety of all children, a fence will be installed to protect children from wandering into 3rd Avenue.
What kind of surfacing will be included to make it wheelchair accessible? A two-layer resilient rubber base will be poured on-site. The new grounding will be slip-resistant, durable, porous, and handicap accessible.
Is the surfacing safe? Yes; the product conforms with and exceeds the Consumer Product Safety Commission's standards!
