THE STORY:

CHICAGO WILDERNESS wrote -

The regal fritillary is currently listed as Endangered in Wisconsin and threatened Illinois, with reduced numbers in both Illinois and Indiana. Today this butterfly is found in less than 5% of its historic range within the Chicago Wilderness Region, as prairie removal has decimated the fritillary’s habitat.

There are currently only a handful of restoration sites in the Chicago Wilderness Region that support the regal fritillary, as they require prairie violets to thrive, making our efforts even more important. Your donation will help Chicago Wilderness, Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum, and other partners assess potential homes for the regal fritillary and develop techniques for breeding this fragile species.
