To whom it may concern,

It has been a great year for me thus far. I've been independent currently maintaining my bills, getting excellent grades [4.0 GPA], heavily contributing to the theatre department and also volunteering in my school's community while being only 19 years old. Very young I know but as my life goes, I remained content and grounded.

When people generally ask, “Who I am,” I tend to keep race out of my answer. If I define myself as an African American, what would that say about me? Would it say that I came from a history of a self-battered community and will continue to blame, or would it say that I came from a history of a self-battered community and will strive for excellence?

Being born in a foreign country and having to adjust to a new one definitely played a major role in becoming the person that I am today. When I first came to America, I was always teased for my heavy accent and the way I was dressed. They would say things like, “go back to your country,” or, “yuck, what does she have on.” I took those harsh words and was determined to learn proper English so I didn’t have to be teased anymore. My mother instilled in my mind that I can’t let things get me down because people will never understand where you came from, “If there’s a will, there’s a way!”

Becoming a young adult, there has been a lot of hurdles in my way. I have had people that have tried to degrade me and state comments like, "What good are you anyway?" Of course you want to and should stay positive, but how are you to feel when financially you are being challenged? Staying positive through every situation would carry you through the worst ones. Throughout my journey I have consumed more “NO’s” than “YES”. Though I never feared rejection! It’s amazing what you can accomplish when you don’t know what you can’t do. The world is full of talented people, but what makes me different is my hard work, drive and determination to get the job done! After high school, I knew that I had to break my family curses and head off to college.

College is a defining moment in a young adult’s life. It will allow me to push beyond my comfort zone and everyday needs. It will also give me a lifelong love of gaining knowledge. With me furthering my education, I will accomplish lifelong dreams and goals that I have set for myself. I would love to become a psychologist!
