We are trying to get bottled water removed form Portland Public Schools, a school district in Oregon. Right now we have Dasani machines that are owned by Coke, and daily students all over Portland are buying their bottled water. Bottled water is no more than filtered tap water, that is less regulated, and marked up 1000% (more or less), and by buying Dasani water, we are supporting the privatization of water in India where Coke has huge bottling plants. This leads to children having to walk miles to find water, often not clean, for their families. These children cannot be educated, and therefore their country cannot develop if its citizens are uneducated. It all starts with a student being thirsty and not knowing what he or she is supporting by buying a bottle of water. There are also the environmental problems with bottled water. 86% of bottled water is NOT recycled, it takes 2.6 liters of water to create 1 liter of bottled water, that is just the water wasted in the making of the bottle, not what the company uses to clean their facilities, nor the water each worker uses. Therefore we are better off without bottled water.
