REPORTERS INSTRUCTED IN SAVI...

Our Mission

RISC is dedicated to promoting the safety of journalists in conflict zones.

Journalist Sebastian Junger founded RISC in 2011 after his close friend and colleague, acclaimed photographer Tim Hetherington, died from wounds he suffered in a mortar attack while covering the conflict in Libya. Hetherington's injuries were serious, and none of the journalists traveling with him were trained in the life-sustaining first aid techniques that might have saved his life during the short ride to the hospital. Nor are most journalists covering conflict today. Staff reporters are often provided training by their employers, but independent journalists have to pay thousands of dollars out of pocket to get training and equipment. Because these freelancers comprise the vast majority of frontline reporters today, they make up the vast majority of deaths and injuries.

We train and equip freelance journalists in all media to prevent and treat life-threatening injuries. Freelancers comprise the vast majority of those who cover wars and humanitarian crises, and consequently make up the vast majority of deaths and injuries. It is our hope to make safety training the industry norm - like having a flak jacket or sat phone - and to prevent unnecessary deaths in a job that is so vital to human dignity and human rights.
