National Relief Charities' Fundraiser:

Reservation School Supplies

National Relief Charities' Photo

Many of us can remember how exciting it was on the first day of school: new clothes, new pencils, a new backpack. We felt ready to tackle all the new subjects and homework that was to come. For thousands of American Indian children who live on rural and isolated reservations, a new school year is often filled with reluctance and anxiety because they will not have the necessary tools to take on new learning challenges. Every child deserves to start the school year with the tools they need to succeed.

NRC’s services are provided through our network of partners who live and work in the communities we serve. For this project our partners are school officials. Each spring we identify schools in isolated reservation communities that are interested in conducting back-to-school events to encourage registration and family involvement in the children’s educational experience. School supplies are provided at these events to draw families and increase enrollment. Parents and other community members help to coordinate the events. NRC provides training assistance to school partners on how to conduct the events and we deliver the supplies directly to the schools. Due to the rural and isolated locations of our communities, this involves driving over 16,000 miles to stop at more than 100 schools.

It is very basic. Schools need supplies to encourage families to send their children to school. Children are more likely to attend school and have and early positive experience if they have the tools they need. Children who come to school prepared learn better.
