THE STORY:

Jessica Yepez wrote -

LOCATION: Woodrow Wilson High School, 3950 Chesapeake St NW, Washington, DC

TIME: 9 AM — NOON

Meet Maria, an 18 year old Guatemalan girl who came to the United States a few years ago. She had a very volatile and at times abusive relationship with her father.  Forced to run away from home due to the abuse, Maria found the LAYC Street Outreach Program/Drop-In Center, where she was given food, clothing, and a warm shower.  She was also referred to the LAYC’s Transitional Living Program (TLP), where she was given housing with a Host Family for the next 18 months. She is currently the youth with the most personal achievements in the TLP program, thanks to her own efforts and the help of staff and the host family. She has been able to continue her studies and has earned several academic leadership awards at school.  She has maintained a 3.75 GPA and joined several after school activities, where she is very active.  The TLP has also helped her access ongoing services, such as medical, dental, and mental health care.  Moreover, Maria obtained a part time job at a local restaurant and has been saving to transition to living independently once her time in the TLP comes to an end.

Like Maria, there are hundreds of other youth who walk through the door here at the Housing Department.  These youth come from all walks of life, different cultures, various life circumstances and often, show up with nothing, looking for help to start a stable and safe life.  It all starts with a warm meal, which goes a long way when they haven’t had access to food in a while.  Often, our programs are often able to help on a long-term basis with housing; resources for food for youth are less available.  Help the Housing Programs feed our youth and families by reaching its goal of raising $2000.
