Our Mission

Inspired by Pittsburgh’s industrial and economic reinvention, Resonance Works is a collaborative, multi-modal performing arts company dedicated to exploring the confluence of artist, audience, music, and space.

Artist-driven programming sets Resonance Works apart. Our artists are creative partners in every way: performers, administrators, board members, volunteers, and donors. This also means that we create our seasons around our artists, rather than beginning the process with repertoire which then must be cast.  The result is that our artists are often more deeply involved in and committed to our mission both within the company and in our service to Pittsburgh as a whole than they might be otherwise.

We use the term "multi-modal" very specifically, in the sense of "multiple ways": though our performances are variously expressed as opera, choral and/or orchestral works, and chamber music, with elements of dance, photography, and spoken word thrown into the mix -- everything we do is inspired by the same ethos: an artist-driven organization serving the community of Pittsburgh as a whole.

When we say "the confluence of artist, audience, music, and space," we mean that we do not confine ourselves to any one space for our events:  theaters, schools, concert halls, churches, and industrial spaces have all already served as venues in the nearly two years since we were first formed.  The works we produce and the spaces in which we perform them are carefully to chosen to complement one another -- the desired result being that our work "resonates" more powerfully with our audiences -- entertaining and engaging them, education and moving them deeply.

The increasingly broad spectrum of our programming over the last two years has included fully-staged operas by Verdi, Donizetti, and Menotti, orchestral works by Shostakovich, Mahler, Debussy, and Copland, choral works by Britten, Pergolesi, and Pittsburgh's own Nancy Galbraith, and chamber works by Barber, Bach, Boulanger, and others.  Planning for next season already includes an even broader and more exciting lineup of composers, librettists, and incredibly talented vocal, visual, and instrumental artists from Pittsburgh and beyond!
