Hiram Farm exists to provide adults with autism spectrum disorder and other disabilities an opportunity to grow, learn and work in a setting focused on respect and support for individuals and the environment. Our facilities are located on a 15 acre organic farm and include a modern barn and two hoop-style greenhouses. We operate a store where we sell our clients' (Farmers) craft and wood-working creations and fresh organic produce.
For six years now, we have used portable toilets on the farm. While they are enclosed in a shed, they are heated with small space heaters and winters in Ohio are often bitterly cold! We very much need heated restrooms and potable running water. (The only water on the farm is from a well that can only be used for animals and gardening, not for human consumption.) We have developed a plan that is modest in scope but meets our needs. The plan includes a restroom facility with five individual restrooms, a shower, clothes washer and dryer. It will be attached to the barn. The plan also includes providing natural gas heating for the bathrooms, the barn and the greenhouses.
To do this, we will need to install over 600 feet of sewer line and 500 feet each of water and gas lines. We can then construct the bathrooms and install the heating necessary for all of our indoor spaces. When the highly inefficient electric heaters are replaced by gas heating we envision measurable savings (and a more positive environmental impact) that will be reinvested in our program for the benfit of our farmers. The cost for this entire project is $55,000.
All of this will make daily life on the farm more comfortable and will allow programming to be better focused on the needs of our Farmers.
