BENEFITING: IDEAS FOR US
The area in Bithlo, FL where our project is located does not have access to city water or sewage. There is a history of dumping in the area that has polluted their ground water with very dangerous chemicals. So much so that the area has been nominated as an EPA designated Brownfield site. Because of the dumping and lack of city water there is a vicious cycle of people living off polluted well water. Grocery stores are not easily accessible. Bus access is expanding thanks to the work of Tim McKinney and United Global Outreach, but the community still lacks easy access to real food. What they do have is a 7-11 that sells microwavable burritos and Twinkies. Engineers Without Borders - UCF chapter, IDEAS - UCF chapter, and United Global Outreach are building a garden for the children of Orange County Academy (OCA) that both filters and conserves water while ensuring that the plants aren't contaminated by the polluted soil. More importantly the produce our garden will grow gives the children the right kind of nutrition. What we are doing is building an Aquaponics system.
