Raid of "1851 Treaty" Camp Happening Now
October 27, 2016

Thanks to all the donations I'm heading out tomorrow (as part of several caravans heading out) to reconnect with the crew. Catching livestreams See More

THE STORY:

Updated 10/06/16 to reflect current progress and address any concerns. This crowdfunding page exists to support my efforts in backing a native crew (as executive producer and newest member of the team) in filming a full length documentary. To do this I am working full time handling logistics along with usual responsibilities for the role. Breakdown of where the funds raised will be used for are below.

For those who want to support the crew's day to day survival, donate to them directly here: www.gofundme.com/2k4kgchk

Donations to the larger camp itself should go here: standingrock.org/news/standing-rock-sioux-tribe--dakota-access-pipeline-donation-fund/

About the team: http://www.sundance.org/blogs/native-filmmakers-fighting-the-dakota-pipeline-at-standing-rock

Why support this project?
I chose to devote my energy to this project because it is crucial to get native voices telling native stories. I have amazed by the footage that Cody and Ben-Alex have been able to capture, along with many others. There is a lack of trust with and often a lack of understanding with non-native media. While there I learned the need for this first hand, and efforts to be a genuine help are undermined by those treating this as a vacation or an opportunity to profit.

For those not familiar with North Dakota winters, it gets below zero and the wind whips at 50mph. It's already getting uncomfortably cold and hard on those occupying the ground at the various camps. By the end of the month it might be too cold to continue construction on the pipeline and the camps themselves--thus the escallation we are seeing on the ground with the construction crews, law enforcement, and the water protectors.

Industry, media, local government, and local law enforcement are allowing if not stoking racial division. It is crucial at this juncture to have witnesses and story tellers, especially ones that are trusted by their communities. We have never in our lifetimes seen a pan-continental indigenous movement in North America. Yes, we need jobs and economic development--but instead of an extractive economy we need to build a resilient economy that will not take from future generations' ability to survive.

Money raised for the filmmaking crew are going to:

  • Logistics, transportation, and hotel for team $2k
  • Cold weather gear and lodging $1k
  • 1 mo camera gear rental $4k
  • Hard drives and memory cards $1k
  • Used snowmobile $3k

We believe in sharing the love so I also do my best to transport native folks who wouldn't be able to go otherwise and the hotel rooms are usually packed full of people getting out of the cold and needing showers to where even the floor space is crowded. If we look out for one another it's amazing what we can accomplish together.
