Local Orphanage Tech Lab Initiative
Organized by: Christina Wei
Hi everyone! To start off, we would like to thank you for clicking on our fundraiser and taking the time to read our story.
My partner, Beulah Dadala, and I, Christina Wei, have decided to start a project and are pooling our resources together to help orphans in the Indian states of Andhra Pradesh and Orissa.
In India, receiving an education is not easy for orphans. They do not have parents or family members to support them physically, emotionally, or financially. Thus, it is not easy for these kids to acquire the necessary materials, including books, uniforms, and supplies, or money to gain an education. As a result, many orphaned children do not have the opportunity to go to school. Since education greatly impacts a child’s life, we seek to provide the technological resources necessary to help these orphaned children receive better educations.
I recently went to Kathmandu, Nepal to help refurbish the Punarbal Home, an orphanage for ostracized children who were tested HIV-positive. After working through my Christmas and New Year to renovate the home, I was rewarded with the orphans’ beaming smiles. This sight of smiles is one of the most beautiful sights of Nepal, and every child, including those in India, deserves to have such smiles on their faces— something to bring optimism and hope into their lives.
My partner, Beulah, and her family have been helping out these orphanages for nearly 20 years and have seen many of the children grow up. From celebrating festivals to spending time with these children in their trips to India, they saw the potential in these children and sought out solutions to allow these kids to burgeon. They have realized that setting up computer labs is the best way to educate and aid these orphans in our increasingly technological world.
To improve the educational infrastructure, we plan to use every donation that we receive to institute computer lab units, in which we will install open source programs that have been shown to radically improve children’s written and spoken English, their typing skills, as well as their arithmetic.
Through these resources, orphans who previously did not have access to an education, do. The very children who were orphaned can now have the tools to raise up and provide for themselves and others the life that they deserve—a better life.
This sort of computer-based learning model has already been implemented in places like Manipur, India; Rwanda; and Liberia—and with great success as many children have picked up solid English and math skills. Each of these places have children who are in need of an education, but their society is not able to provide one.
Our goal is to start computer labs in three orphanages, each with more than 100 children. There, the older children and volunteers teach the younger children. Resources are spread thin, but such computer labs can help alleviate that stress. In each orphanage, we wish to provide 2 laptops, 1 LCD projector, and 1 hard drive equipped with Khan Academy’s video lessons in relevant subjects in each orphanage, totaling 6 laptops, 3 LCD projectors, and 3 hard drives.
Every donation counts, and every one of your contributions will make a huge difference to their lives. It would mean so much to us and the orphans if you shared our project via Facebook, Twitter, email, etc. We deeply appreciate anything that you can help us with. Together, we can build a better education for these children and encourage a better life for each and every one of them. Their smiles are a gift in return.
Thank you so much!!
