BENEFITING: Caminos de Accion
Jessica Idalia Gomez Tejada was born July 8, 1996 in the community of Tehuiste Arriba in La Paz, El Salvador. She graduated high school in February 2017 as a Caminos de Accion (CdA) scholarship student and will start university in January 2018 where she wants to study social work so that she can return to her community to provide development services. Her favorite community project through the CdA Scholarship Program is the Adult Literacy Program. In fact, Jessica Idalia started this program! More often than not, the adults of Los Tehuistes do not finish elementary school and live their lives more or less illiterate. Jessica's own father and mother did not go beyond the 2nd and 3rd grade, respectively. So, she contacted the Salvadorn Department of Education, obtained teaching materials, and created levels of competency for her adult students to pass in her program. She has already had several students pass Level One and move onto Level Two! With a university degree in social work, she hopes to continue her Adult Literacy Program as well as create many more programs to benefit her community.
Caminos de Accion (CdA) works in Los Tehuistes, two rural sister villages in La Paz, El Salvador where, in addition to studying (100% of participants graduate), our students run health and sanitation campaigns, river and street clean ups, and an adult literacy program. The funds that scholarships students receive monthly from Caminos de Accion for transportation, food, tuition, uniforms, and school supplies ensure families don’t have to sacrifice their children’s education.
