We have almost raised enough for a basic roof repair. I hope to go next week with a few volunteers to get started. A few more $ would help. See More

THE STORY:

Maria Alejandrina Miranda Nieto, known as Reyna, is a 58 year old widow living in Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico. She is the sixth daughter of her family. She has lived a lifetime of helping others and now needs a little help of her own.

She was born in Ensenada, and as a young woman she studied to be a secretary. She was never able to work in that field because she had to take care of her parents. Reyna married Napoleon Contreras and they had a son named Pedro Luis. At a later time, Napoleon (Reyna's husband), got hooked on drugs and was unable to take care of his family.

Thankfully, through Reyna's love and support, Napoleon was convinced to go to rehab to deal with his addicition. As a result of the change that came over him, both Napoleon and Reyna dedicated the next 14 years to working in rehab centers feeding and giving classes to the people there. They became Directors of a rehab center in the state of Sonora, Mexico. Sadly, in 2009, Napoleon became ill and then passed away, leaving Reyna with no economic support.

She has an income of just 3,000 pesos a month (about $180) to live on. She takes care of 2 little boys during the day while their mothers work to help supplement her income. She also has diabetes which she has to monitor and she needs regular medical care for that condition.

Here is the problem: She lives in a small house, along with her son and his wife, in downtown Ensenada. The house is in very poor condition and she lacks the resources to repair it. The roof leaks in many places, the ceiling is sagging in places from water damage, some of the wood framing is rotted out and needs to be replaced, the windows are non-operational (can't be opened for ventilation, and aren't secure), and the house is badly in need of painting. If nothing is done, it will continue to get worse and worse to the point that it will be uninhabitable (some may say it is that way now).

It is also unhealthy for her in her condition, and unhealthy and unsafe for the children she cares for.

We are asking for donations with the hope of raising $2,500 so that, with volunteer labor, we can get the house back into reasonably good condition. We are not talking about a cosmetic remodel to make it into a showplace. We just want to repair the roof, replace the ceiling where it is bad, replace rotted wood, replace the windows with good quality but economical sliding windows, replace the siding on the front of the house, and give it all a paint job. Whether you can donate $10 or $500, your help is appreciated.

This fall and winter are expected to be wetter than normal due to an El Nino conditions. We really need to get this done before the heavy rains hit. Please do what you can to help.

We don't have to raise all the money before we start. We can do the roof once we raise $1,000. The next phase might only take another $500. In other words: the sooner we get donations in, the sooner we can protect her from the rainy weather to come.

Thank you,

Scott Butler
