BENEFITING: R F YOUTH BOXING INC
EVENT DATE: Dec 31, 2014
The RF Youth Boxing Program provides a safe haven for at-risk children and teens from low income families in the Stamford, CT area by offering after school programs that provide physical activity and mentorship through the sport of boxing.
Boxing is without a doubt one of the most rewarding and challenging sports available for youth today. The combination of athleticisim, physical and mental conditioning, sportmanship, and self-dignity that develop from a well-structured boxing program are unequaled in any other sport.
The program, now in it's 7th year, was started by Ahmad Mickens, a Master Trainer and Boxing Coach who is also the managing partner at Revolution Training in Stamford, CT. Ahmad says he started the program because,
“I recognized that my adolescent years were very tumultuous and if it was not for the structure, guidance and mentorship I found at that age I don't know where I would have been. Boxing provided me with the framework that helped me to build the foundation for my life. I believe I was destined to take my life experience and wisdom and help people that could benefit from them.”
Some of his favorite memories over the past 7 years include:
“Our first amateur boxing show / fundraiser (Fall Fisticuffs). It was to me our best event. It was at RF, everyone came out to support (even the mayor), we gave away free food and drinks and we even had our own RF boxer box on the show. Another highlight is when I witnessed our first three (RF Youth Boxing participants) graduate high school, two went on to graduate from college and one went into military. Two of the three are now married with families of their own.
As for the future of RF Youth Boxing, Ahmad says:
“I continue to meet the most incredible people in the work I do with the youth. People that don't talk the talk, they walk the walk. They come through for our youth. They don't just sit back and complain. In the future I see the Youth Program expanding our outreach. I see us perfecting the frame work it takes to implement our program in communities around the nation that needs us. I want our positive approach to assisting our youth to become contagious!!!”
In honor of our programs 7th birthday and the many lives we have touched by helping the children and families in our community, we hope to raise $25,000. These funds will allow us to:
1. Double the number of operating hours we offer throughout the week.
2. Offer 15 additional slots to the youth in our area, particularly those who reside in group homes, foster care or are part of the juvenile justice system.
By making a donation, you CAN make a difference. You CAN positively impact the children and families in our community.
