BENEFITING: SAVE THE RHINO INTERNATIONAL INC
EVENT DATE: Apr 06, 2014
At the turn of the 19th century, there were approximately one million rhinos, in 1970 there were around 70,000, today there are fewer than 25,000 in the wild. The last Javan rhino in Vietnam has just gone extinct. Last year saw a RECORD number (946) of rhino poachings in South Africa. Enough said.
South Africa is home to 83% of Africa’s rhinos and 73% of all wild rhinos worldwide. However rhino poaching has reached a crisis point, and if the killing continues at this rate, we could see rhino deaths overtaking births in 2016-2018, meaning rhinos could go extinct in the very near future.
The Mission: ....yes folks, we will be running full marathons in something akin to a portable sauna with an oversized face mask (see pic). Whether its $10 or $10,000 pls donate to the cause (and spread the word!!)....it'll all help to lighten our load, and ultimately to save what rhinos we still have left....
Bringing the message East: Save the Rhino Foundation's Running Rhino's have long been a favourite feature of the London Marathon and a key fundraiser for this important organistaion's effort in the plight to save rhinos. The Flamand brothers plan in 2012 to take their message eastwards through inaugaral appearances at the Dubai and then the Hong Kong Marathons was a great success. They raised $21,000 for rhino conservation ....It wasnt easy but nor is the plight of the Rhino....

Bringing the message to Paris: As the recent numbers of rhinos poached continue to soar, the situation requires renewed efforts and energy (see poaching stats picture below). This year (2014), Richard intends to repeat the feat at the Schneider-Electric Paris marathon. He will be supporeted by his trusty Zookeeper Stephane Piat as they attempt the 42.2 Km's in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower.
Not for the faint hearted, the brave attempt aims to keep the awareness growing and build on the donations for Save the Rhino!
Yours in rhino welfare,
Richard and Stephane
P.S see article about our last effort in Hong Kong and DUbai which got the attention of Edward Norton the actor http://www.athlebrities.com/2012/02/29/ed-norton-helps-to-save-rhinos/
