BENEFITING: RIBBON OF HOPE INC
EVENT DATE: Oct 12, 2014
Cancer. It affects so many people daily.
11 years ago I lost my father to Lung cancer and I understand how it impacts people and their loved ones. As an Oncology nurse I see and help people fight cancer daily - not only the physical fight, but the emotional and spirtual fight as well. Those who have a good support network of family, friends, and caregivers do so much better with treatment.
When I worked inpatient Oncology I became familiar with Ribbon of Hope. They have such a presence and impact on the people they see. As a new nurse I would want to spend as much time with every patient and tend to all of their needs. I quickly realized that needs became prioritized by time constraints. Medical care came first, as time permitted I would do my best to be there for many of their other needs. Ribbon of Hope made a big impact on me one night when I had a patient I had grown very close to near the end of her battle. She was alone and had been struggling emotionally and spirtually. I could not let her be alone during this time. I didn't know what to do. I went to Loretta with Ribbon of Hope who somehow happened to be at the hospital later into the evening. She was familiar with the patient and spent time with her during her hour of need.
That moment made me realize on a much deeper level that it takes a team, a group, a good support network that is comprised of many people to fight cancer. This is but one small example of what Ribbon of Hope does.
When I decided that I wanted to raise money for an organization that helps people affected by cancer I knew I wanted something local. An organization that helps the people I see daily, Ribbon of Hope. Running is a big part of who I am, I enjoy inspiring others to follow their dreams. I ran the Chicago Marathon last year and was so overcome by emotions as I had acheived a major goal for myself. One that took many years to realize i COULD accomplish. I knew that I would use my next marathon as my fundraiser. As it happens, this year's marathon is once again the Chicago Marathon.
Please join me in supporting not only Ribbon of Hope, but those fighting THE battle of their lives.
