BENEFITING: NATIONAL HEMOPHILIA FOUNDATION
EVENT DATE: Mar 26, 2011
Since I was a child, I dreamed of running a marathon. But my aspirations were dashed when doctors told me I would never walk again, and I became convinced that my goal was unattainable.
That was four years ago, -- when I was almost sidelined by a rare bleeding disorder called hemophilia.
Hemophilia is a condition in which one of the clotting factors in the liver is missing. This means that a person with hemophilia will bleed longer and experience either spontaneous or injury-related bleeding episodes into joints, muscles, and organs that may cause irreversible damage.
In my case, repeated and uncontrollable bleeding in both legs was supposed to mean that I would never walk again.
Today…I’m proud to say that I am running in the Sun Trust National Marathon tomorrow and I’m raising money to support the organization that provided me with critical inspiration, the National Hemophilia Foundation. Can I count on you to sponsor me? Your gift would mean so much.
After receiving the terrifying news that I would never walk again, I stayed in the hospital for nearly three months. I then spent months in a wheelchair trying desperately to regain strength and mobility in my extremities. On several occasions I wanted to give up…but my family and friends were there to support and help me find the strength to get through this difficult period in my young life.
But another key part of finding the strength I needed, was the National Hemophilia Foundation.
Their youth leadership institute taught me that I could do more than just live with my disease -- I could still achieve my dreams. They gave me the opportunity to become a leader. They gave me hope.
That’s why years later – and a full year of training – I want to give back to the National Hemophilia Foundation. In addition to their youth leadership program, they are also working to find a cure for hemophilia. Even today, hemophilia research is only at the point where I still need to administer IV infusions of clotting factor every day to sustain a quality of life.
I hope you’ll sponsor me in this marathon. Your gift will help get us one step closer to a cure…your gift will help others like me who needed hope when their futures looked bleak…
Thank you for standing with me.
