THE STORY:

Rich Rundle wrote -

A few years ago my brother was diagnosed with MS. Feeling helpless, I joined many organizations that are searching for cures to MS, and other chronic diseases, that seemingly have no hope. It was through my search that my family and I realized how much work is being done to help people who are suffering everyday with a chronic disease. I truly believe that because my brother saw how much work is being done and how people are pushing themselves to new heights, he became inspired to never give up.

On July 29 & 30, 2014 I will be biking from New York City to The Capitol Building in Washington, DC to spread the message of hope and to raise money supporting The New York Stem Cell Foundation (NYSCF). I want people with chronic diseases to realize that they are not in this fight alone. There are so many people fighting with them everyday.

Organizations like NYSCF have kept my brother in this fight. He is out of a wheelchair and no longer needs assistance to walk. Everyday he wakes up and takes a step; he is fighting back and there are so many of us taking this journey with him inspiring him to keep fighting.

At the end of July I will be spreading the message of hope that NYSCF keeps alive. Join me with a contribution, or join me on the ride; over 255 miles in two days. Together we can win, together we can bring light to where there is darkness...together we can inspire hope.

ABOUT THE NEW YORK STEM CELL FOUNDATION:

~~NYSCF is unique: as an independent laboratory with the depth and excellence of a highly focused research laboratory usually identified only with top academic research institutions, yet unencumbered by university process and challenges, it has had a profound effect on the entire field of stem cell research. Since its establishment, NYSCF has conducted the most advanced stem cell research, both in its own laboratory and also in collaboration with major medical research institutions around the world. As a non-profit biotech, NYSCF bridges the gap between the research conducted by academic institutions and the work of pharmaceutical and biotech companies—a gap which inhibits the development of new treatments and cures.

Co-founded in 2005 by Susan L. Solomon, NYSCF is supported through private philanthropy. By creating its own state-of-the-art laboratory and by supporting and pursuing only the most advanced stem cell research, NYSCF has become a catalyst in this promising field.

- NYSCF has a proven track record of identifying, initiating, and funding critical “tipping point” experiments that continue to change what scientists view as possible and lift the entire stem cell research field.

- By focusing on cutting-edge research, ideas which traditional funding mechanisms will not support, and through its creation of a new model for translating basic research to the drug discovery stage, NYSCF can fast-track research advances into better treatments and cures for disease.

- Specific research programs include assay development, compound screening and target validation, a personalized medicine bank containing stem cell lines representing the genetic diversity of the human population, and a drug discovery center that uses stem cells to screen for new drug compounds.

- The NYSCF Global Stem Cell Array™ is a revolutionary robotic technology developed by NYSCF that enables us for the first time to functionalize human genetics by merging data from the human genome with our own biology – accelerating new therapies and cures for patients using actual human cells affected by disease. This revolutionary approach will help “de-risk” projects that pharmaceutical companies would typically avoid. At present, it takes 13 years to bring a drug to market and, on average, costs $4 billion and has a 99% failure rate.  The NYSCF Array will cut down years of time and billions of dollars currently spent on drug development and clinical trials to ultimately accelerate the approval of new drugs and therapies by the regulatory agencies.
