We raised 5% already, yay! Ricky says, "thanks!" Ricky just had blood work done. We are on day 8 post surgery and everything is looking good. See More

THE STORY:

I’ll keep this intro short and sweet, but for more details, including the scans of all of the invoices/receipts, please scroll down…

The Short Story:
Ricky is an incredibly sweet and soulful 2 year old pit bull whom I have been fostering since November on behalf of Home Free Animal Rescue & Sanctuary. In late February, he had to have emergency surgery to remove a blockage in his intestines. I paid all of the medical bills with my credit card, but unfortunately neither I nor the rescue has the money to cover it right now. I just needed Ricky to get better, and I have faith that this will all work out for us. I’m raising money through this campaign to help ease the burden on the brand new rescue which has limited resources. They will be reimbursing me in payments, but I wanted to try and help out as much as I can.

The Long(er) Story:
Ricky started getting sick in the beginning of February. He was throwing up his meals and had diarrhea, so I made an appointment for the vet on February 4. X-rays revealed some kind of foreign body in his stomach and gas pockets in his intestines, so the vet recommended exploratory abdominal surgery which we scheduled for the next day. I got a phone call several hours after I dropped him off for surgery that Ricky had thrown up some socks and part of a sports bra. More x-rays showed that part of the bra was still in there, but the vet sent us home with instructions to feed him a bland diet for a week and see if the rest passes. For the next week he continued to have loose mucousy stools, but the vet said that this was normal because of the bland diet and to follow up if he started vomiting again.

On Thursday February 25, I came home during my lunch break and found Ricky had thrown up everywhere that morning, so I took him back to the vet right way, in tears. They tested for parasites and took more x-rays and, again, sent us home.

On Saturday February 27, Ricky’s demeanor completely changed, he wouldn’t eat and he was very depressed and lethargic. Again, the vet sent us home! I was frustrated and angry. I wanted answers. I wanted Ricky to get better. Something needed to be done to fix this poor boy, and I had to make it happen fast!

On Sunday February 28, I took him to Long Beach Animal Hospital for a second opinion. More x-rays of course (my original vet was closed that day, so we did not have access to her x-rays or records), but Dr. Yamamoto could clearly see that he had an obstruction (the rest of the bra) and sent us to the emergency hospital for surgery right away. What a relief! He was in surgery overnight for 6 hours. The bra had partially made its way down through the intestines and did some damage, so they had to remove part of the intestines.

*********************************************

I knew that the money situation would be rough, but I just needed to get him better and the reality is that he had to have the surgery if he was going to even survive. As scary and expensive as a major surgery like this is, it is such a huge relief to know that Ricky is on the road of recovery finally (which is going wonderfully so far!) Every day is a major milestone victory right now as he is still recovering. So, the stress of him being sick has been majorly lifted, but now the stress of coming up with the money is setting in. Every dollar helps, if you can donate anything, Ricky and I will be forever grateful <3

*********************************************

Please, feel free to ask me any questions. Transparency is very important to me, and I want everyone to know that this money will be put directly towards paying only the medical bills related to this surgery. Since the money is helping the rescue reimburse me, they will send you a tax receipt for your donation.
