BENEFITING: New River Valley Bicycle Association
Hi! Thanks for reading this.
This Fall (September-December) I am embarking on what I hope to be an amazing journey across the United States, on my bike. Along the way I want to raise awareness for an amazing charity called the New River Valley Bike Kitchen. They do some seriously great work and are operated by basically out-of-pocket expenses from the owners Beth and Jerry, plus the hard work of volunteers on Saturdays (myself included). Any funds raised would go directly into building necessary infrastructure, buying bike parts, and keeping this valuable service to the community alive and sustainable.
"Our mission at the Bike Kitchen is to create a resource hub for people to access essential neighborhood services on a recycled bicycle. To this end, we are building a social bike business to provide bikes to people without the social or economic capital to find one elsewhere."
To put it simply, the Bike Kitchen recieves donated or neglected bikes and fixes them up for people who want/need a bike. Bikes are taken in, evaluated, recycled/scrapped (if they are junk), or fixed up, stored, and then distributed. The Bike Kitchen works with Churches, other charities, and by word of mouth to get bikes out the door and into the hands of children, ex-prisoners, and people below the poverty line, etc. All bikes are free or cost about $20, even if the bike is worth hundreds! We make sure the bikes are safe to ride and even put reflectors on it and give the recipient a helmet if they need one- courtesy of Brain Injury Services of Southwest VA.
I sincerely appreciate you taking the time to read this... I have volunteered at the bike kitchen for the past year and I can testify that 100% of any money you donate will go directly to benefit the Bike Kitchen's mission.
