BENEFITING: UNITE TO LIGHT
EVENT DATE: Jul 09, 2016
John Bowers and Dan Blumenthal and their team are set to Ride For Lights with Team UNITE-TO-LIGHT at the Team Evergreen Double Triple Bypass (240 miles and 20,000 vertical feet climbing) event in July 2016. Support goes to Unite to Light (a 501 c 3 non-profit). Through the ride and this website they are helping raise donations to shine a light on the non-profit called Unite to Light.
Unite to Light’s mission is to bring low cost solar lighting to those without electricity, and eliminate the health and environmental issues associated with existing light sources used by this population, such as kerosene. Unite to Light is now engaged with over 100 organizations in over 60 countries on 4 continents to supply solar based lighting to people in the developing world. Help brighten a life - for every $10 donated, a multi-purpose solar light with rechargeable battery will be sent to someone in need.
“My name is Lewis Ayenza. I am in class eight, Mr. Kimathi gave me a solar lamp. Now I can read about 2 hours when I go home at night. I can work hard because my mother can take the solar lamp and keep it under the sun to charge. We do not have electricity and sometimes we were not having money for buying paraffin. But now as I have that solar lamp it helps me and I read and do my studies well. Am so happy about it.” -- Lewis A. (Kenya)
For every $10 donated you fund distribution of the solar powered Luke Light, a multi-purpose solar light with rechargeable battery (http://www.unite-to-light.org/specifications.html). A Luke light will be sent to someone in need. Unite To Light will ship lights to any country in which they have a distributor.
Larger donations also fund Disaster relief, an important part of the impact that Unite to Light is making around the world. Through their partners Unite To Light has distributed thousands of lights to victims of disasters from Japan to Haiti to the Philippines. Your donation will find a good home thanks to their international partners.
We are also raising funds for Unite To Light through corporate sponsorship of logos on the team riding jerseys. For information on corportate sponsorship contact Dan Blumenthal via this website.
Lighting should be safe, clean and affordable to all. Over 1.5 billion people rely on fuels such as kerosene for lighting. Such fuels are expensive and provide inferior light for studying and other purposes. These fuels produce smoke and soot that result in unhealthy air quality, irritate the eyes and lungs and expose those around to the same negative health effects as heavy smoking. Lack of suitable home lighting is directly linked to illiteracy, poverty and health problems. The current widespread burning of kerosene for lighting results in substantial carbon release and environmental pollution and increased health issues and costs.
- "These solar lights are not only a blessing to us, but we have also given lights to students at Kiwahumu Vocational Training Centre high up on Mt. Meru, and to students at Dolly Primary School - both places where there is no mains electricity and students are not able to study at night. Now, they can study and of course this increases their chances of passing exams in the future."
- "If these children have their own light that they can focus on their studies, literally focus them on their book; they can study later in the evening, because if they do not pass this exam, their education ends."
- "The solar lamps where distributed amongst 30 families. and they will be saving an average of $ 110 a year by not using candles. You can imagine what this means for them when their monthly income barely reaches $300 and as you know they have many children." - Frances (Guatemala)
