Ride for Mikey
Organized by: Brendan Loomis
EVENT DATE Jul 12, 2014
Last year just after Thanksgiving and just before Christmas a friend of mine, Mike Carrasco, affectionately referred to as Mikey, was taken to the hospital after having some issues with his health and knowing something wasn’t right. After spending several days in Barnes Jewish Hospital here in St Louis (It’s in Missouri…in the middle), it was determined that he had Multiple Sclerosis. This came as a huge shock to me! I felt terrible for Mikey immediately! And then I was like, “Wait. …What’s Multiple Sclerosis?” So I did what everybody does and I Googled it. After I read about it, I was scared for Mikey. For those reading this who haven’t Googled it yet, here’s the definition from the Mayo Clinic website:
“Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a potentially debilitating disease in which your body's immune system eats away at the protective sheath (myelin) that covers your nerves. Damage to myelin causes interference in the communication between your brain, spinal cord and other areas of your body. This condition may result in deterioration of the nerves themselves, a process that's not reversible.”
So I went and talked to Mikey about it….and he wasn’t even scared at all. Once I started talking about wanting to do something to help Mikey out with his overwhelming bills and inform people about MS, people started asking if they could pitch in somehow. I mean, the amount of people who knew exactly who I was talking about just from saying his name was staggering! And the STORIES! What an amazing person he has been to so many people; not just here in STL, but in Austin, TX (his hometown) as well! Anything you could give would be greatly appreciated.
