BENEFITING: TEAM RUBICON
Mileage Tracker: 157
Team Rubicon is a great organization for Veterans to organize and continue serving through disaster recovery. I am a volunteer for Team Rubicon, but I have been unable to deploy with them since I blew out my service-connected knee (again). Almost a year after my surgery, I really need to force myself to strengthen my knee(s) and get in shape (lose 40 lbs) so that I can deploy with TR in the future.
So I bought a new bike to motivate me. Then I thought, what if I could do some good as well by raising money for Team Rubicon while I'm riding to recovery. So here it is, my campaign = Riding for Team Rubicon. I'm going to post every trip log (using Strava) here on my fundraiser site. You can donate as much or as little as you want. One shot, by the mile, by the trip, whatever. Everything helps Team Rubicon continue to help families here and internationally recover from disasters.
So why $1499? Before I bought my bike, I was considering buying myself a quadcopter with a camera on a gimble to give myself a hobby. My wife, who always supports me and guides me, asked if it would make me happier to get that toy or to lose my belly. She was right, standing in a field flying an RC quadcopter wouldn't do anything for my recovery and I would probably spend more time at the computer looking over footage. I need to earn that, so I decided to pay myself $1 per mile to save the money for the quadcopter. (That's what's known as a lead measure, while the lag measure will hopefully be weight-loss, improved strength and increased endurance). So when I started this campaign, I thought that Team Rubicon could use the $1499 I raise to buy themselves a quadcopter to aid in their disaster recover efforts, or for any other use they saw fit. It was just a number that stuck. To be clear, Crowdrise sends and funds received directly to Team Rubicon, never to me--I'm just the guy with the bike!
