WHO WE ARE
RISE Yoga for Youth is a nonprofit that brings yoga and wellness programing to underserved teens in the Bay Area. Our mission is to empower teens to be agents of positive change in the world and help them build the inner resources they need to face life's many challenges in constructive ways.
In January of 2012, we launched a small pilot program at Mission High School in collaboration with the Mission High PE Department that brought yoga and wellness workshops to students during their P.E. period. We have since expanded to 13 school sites, serving over 1,200 students. All funds raised at the at the Yogathon will help to keep our program going and growing at Mission High School and other low-income schools in the Bay Area. WHY OUR PROGRAM? WHY DONATE?
Youth are more stressed today than ever, which affects their physical, mental and emotional health, the safety of their school environments, and their academic success. Many of our students come from low-income, under-resourced backgrounds, where they are burdened by socio-economic stressors and trauma that can dictate their life and sense of self. Most of RISE's partnering schools are public school that often lack the flexibility in their budgets to afford the cost of a full yoga and wellness program, so we depend on the community's support to continue our work in these schools.
RISE works to help students alleviate stress, find alternatives to violence, and develop compassion for themselves and for others.
RISE's curriculum incorporates physical exercise (hatha yoga), breath work, and activities that foster social-emotional learning. Stress management techniques and mindfulness exercises are an integral part of each class, so students can build the inner resources to lead healthier, happier, resilient lives. A typical program happens as an alternative to the regular PE class, or as an elective source. It meets 1 -3 times per week for a semester/year.
