BENEFITING: COMMUNITY WORKS WEST INC
"Rising Voices saved me and helped me to be the person I am today."
Rising Voices is a paid writing and performance internship for previously incarcerated women ages 18-25. The internship provides women with a safe creative space to investigate intense experiences and provide each other with peer support, as well as to find meaningful ways of sharing their voices with the community. Rising Voices supports women in staying out of jail, encouraging ensemble members to value their power as artists and agents of change.
An excerpt from Rising Voices' latest production, "Found":
CASEY: Who am I now? A loving friend – dependable, loyal, strong and determined. Someone that’s true, that you can pick out of a crowd.
JANISA: Who am I now? A respectful person. Now I treat others with the respect they deserve.
GESSELLE: Who am I now? Wise beyond my years. Once a girl, misguided in the world…transformed through wisdom and growth.
THERESA: Who am I now? Strong and determined, working three jobs and learning to love myself.
ANGIE: Who am I now? Solid and consistent. A hard worker that wants to give back to the community. A responsible mother who has changed my life, so that I can show up for my kids.
MYCELLE: Who am I now? A proud black mother, loving sister, sweet granddaughter, caring daughter, and loyal friend.
ALL: Who am I now?
ADRIANA: Compassionate and confident. I may not know what the future holds for me, but I know I’m headed in the right direction.
