BENEFITING: FATHERS HEART MINISTRIES
I dedicated this year to serving the community through the AmeriCorps program. My host site was the New York City Coalition Against Hunger (NYCCAH) and my placement site was The Father's Heart Ministries (FHM).
My birthday is on December 17! In place of festivities or gifts, I would love for a donation to be made to FHM; my goal is to raise at least $2,600! All amounts are welcome; no donation is ever too small!
The Father's Heart Ministries offers an array of community services involving hunger prevention, education, and empowerment. Our client base includes the elderly, poor and low-income residents, the homeless, immigrants, and at-risk youth of the Lower East Side of Manhattan. In this geographic area, one in four residents lives below the poverty line. We refer to these clients as our “guests” because we want them to be treated with respect and dignity. We serve over 700 guests per week at our soup kitchen & food pantry.
It’s a blessing to be part of such a fabulous team at FHM! I'm so grateful for the opportunity to join in FHM's efforts to serve the community. I would love to give back to the organization that has taught and given me so much.
I would like for donations to go towards:
- Purchasing 8 Chromebooks to help with our food pantry intake areas - total cost $2,000. Why do we need Chrombebooks? On Saturdays, after our guests are finished eating in the soup kitchen area, they have the option to receive a pantry bag full of groceries on their way out at one of our 8 checkout stations. We use a cloud based checkout system using Google Spreadsheets. We currently use Dells that are a little out dated. We’ve run into issues such as some of the keys on the keyboards being non-functional and the laptops tend to have longer than normal boot time. Chromebooks are very easy and intuitive to use (with super short boot time!), which will come in handy as we train new volunteers on the system weekly.
- Providing party items and prizes for our KidZone program for the remainder of the 2013-2014 school year - $600+. How would we spend the $600? KidZone is designed to strengthen families and to build self-esteem and creativity in the children and youth we serve. Celebrating the different holidays (Christmas, Valentines Day, Graduation, etc) helps to further nurture self-worth and self-esteem in our youths, which we hope will help them choose against violence and prejudice. Items we will purchase range from party favors to decorations, all in an effort to create and promote a safe and loving atmosphere.
- All additional donations would go towards the general upkeep of our programs and services (Soup Kitchen, Food Pantry, GED, ESL, KidZone, and Alphabet Scoop).
