BENEFITING: RITE OF PASSAGE JOURNEYS
Rite of Passage Journeys (Journeys) has a nearly 50-year history of life-affirming programs that connect youth, adults and elders to the wonders of nature, the belonging of community and the mystery and fulfillment of one’s soul path. Our programs include extended wilderness backpacking adventures for youth and unique rite of passage training, quests and experiential workshops for adults. We also deliver educational presentations, consultation and customized programs, to seed the integrative effects of rite of passage work directly into existing communities.
HISTORY OF JOURNEYS
The history of Journeys reaches back to the 1950’s to a community engaged in deep inquiry and discernment into the broad question of how to grow and nurture mature, capable and committed human beings and healthy human communities. This community flowered into the Institute of Cultural Affairs (ICA), an international NGO doing pioneering service work around the world. The Journeys program was inspired by this global work. When ICA members found that the healthiest communities they visited provided intentional rites of passage for their young people, they decided to do that for their own youth at home in Chicago, and the first “Sixth Grade Trip” was initiated in 1968.
In 1987, Stan Crow, director of Journeys for most of its history, brought the program to the Seattle area, at the same time co-founding the Songaia Cohousing Community. In the 30 years since, Journeys has grown to serve transitions across the lifespan and has been a forerunner in the movement to restore meaningful, culturally-relevant rites of passage in contemporary life.
We are working towards a world where young people are supported, challenged, and honored in developing their unique gifts in service to their communities and planet. Where Elders have a cherished role in that process. Where adults have opportunities to do the work their souls long to do. Where collective ceremonies feel alive with meaning and power. Where rites of passage are in place to effectively guide us through each vital life stage.
During these times of global transition, we see great power and possibility in rites of passage to catalyze healing in human-Earth relationships and to aid in the effort to attain justice and equality in our multi-cultural societies. Thus our Mission: to mentor youth, adults and elders through life transitions, initiating soulful leaders for the next generation.
With your help, we are steadily and thoughtfully building a foundation for growth into the next level of service to our region and mission. We invite you to invest in our youth and in the movement to restore meaningful rites of passage to our communities, and help us attain these goals:
- Expand our Rite of Passage Leadership Training programs
- Fund a new website, and produce new promotional and educational videos
- Launch a year-long rite of passage program
- Develop our “Rite of Passage Guild” initiative, to embed more rite of passage experiences in existing communities
- Renovate our base camp facilities
We are deeply grateful for your support!
