THE STORY:

The Duwamish is our river.  We must protect it.  All of us.  Together.

In 2001, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) identified the Duwamish River as a Superfund site containing more than 40 chemicals above human and environmental health standards. Today, we have an opportunity to clean our river up so that people and wildlife can once again enjoy its benefits without it posing a risk to their health. But we cannot achieve this goal without your help. In December 2014, the EPA published the final “Record of Decision” (final plan on how, how much, and when to clean up our river) that will guide the cleanup of the river for years to come, until EPA determines that their cleanup goals have been achieved.  But the current plan leaves over 60% of the contaminated mud behind, posing ongoing risks to the health of people, fish, and wildlife that depend on the river.

With your gift today, together we can ensure that the voice of the affected communities continues to be heard and responded to in putting the cleanup plan into action.  Your gift has a direct impact on the health of kids, fish, birds, and everyone that depends on this place.

We must continue to take action and ensure the active support of our city, our county, our port, and our industries for a comprehensive, health-protective cleanup that works, lasts, and protects the health of our communities, our workers, our fishing families, and our wildlife.

The Duwamish is our river.  We must protect it.  All of us.  Together.

Since 2009, we have taken a more holistic, community-based approach in addressing the health of the communities affected by the Superfund Site.  Through the Community Health Program launched in 2011, we collaborate with the community to address their priorities, such as: expand access to fresh, health food; increase tree canopy coverage in the Duwamish Valley; improve existing and expand green and open spaces; promote economic development in the local business districts; control sources of pollution through green stormwater infrastructure; expand programing for at-risk youth, and more.

Please join us in engaging and empowering the community to ensure that the Duwamish is A River For All!
