0% Raised of $2,000 Goal
The Retired Military Working Dog Assistance Organization (RMWDAO), was started in October of 2011 by RMWDAO CEO Lisa P. Phillips. RMWDAO was formed after a push to get the military to reclassify Military Working Dogs from “excess equipment” to “canine veteran” and to help get Military Working Dogs Medical Benefits after retirement. RMWDAO is a nonprofit organization that takes donations to help cover those medical costs after a MWD retires, so that tax dollars aren’t used.
Retired Military Working Dog Assistance Organization’s goal is to (1) educate the public about the benefits to our Armed Forces of Military Working Dogs; (2) help financially with medical bills, transportation and any other necessary requirements for the health and well being of retired Military Working Dogs; and (3) facilitate the adoption of retired Military Working Dogs.
My name is Lisa Phillips, and I was a vet tech in the Army and took care of our Military Working Dogs. After adopting my first retired Military Working Dog in 2005, I became concerned about their classification as equipment and for those lucky enough to be adopted the cost to the adopting families of their medical expenses.
I am back in school, getting my Bachelor of Business Administration. In January of 2010, I was told to write an essay in my English class about something that had meaning to me, so I chose my MWDs and this cause. My teacher told me the essay was excellent and I needed to send it to Congress. I was also in a Public Speaking class, so I used that class to write 3 speeches about MWDs and their reclassification.
Since writing those speeches I have teamed up with Ms. Rachel Lee to strengthen this mission. Mrs. Lee's son, Dustin, was a Marine Dog handler who was killed in action. Mrs. Lee and Congressman Jones from NC worked together after Dustin passed, and was able to retire Dustin's MWD, Lex, and adopt him. Lex was injured by the same blast that took Dustin, his best friend.
