Roan's Circle: combat mental illness, support one girl's education

For a teenager with bipolar illness, school can be one of the biggest sources of stress and dis-ease, creating real risk for symptoms, and confounding efforts to become stable. Rigid schedules, pressure to perform, social stress, and missed assignments and tests due to increased absences, create a perfect storm of stress. Bipolar illness not only affects moods, but also executive functioning skills such as time management, reading social cues, and slower processing speed. Despite these challenges, people with bipolar illness are also usually quite gifted. This is true for my 15-year old daughter Roan who excels at writing and languages. And this is why a vigorous, yet flexible academic environment is so important—and so hard to find.

The Santa Fe Waldorf High School has been able to accommodate Roan’s needs elegantly, allowing her to begin to rebuild her self-esteem and to thrive academically.

As a single mother of two, I am asking for support to help pay for Roan's high school tuition. She has two more years to complete. This fundraiser is for her junior year. Read more about Roan's Circle at
