THE STORY:

I have signed up to run the Chicago marathon in October 2017. This is my first marathon and most likely the only one I ever do. I am not a runner, not an athlete but I do believe in community and putting yourself out for a good cause. I have signed up to run the 26.2 miles in aid of the Hopes for Kids charity, who provide educational support for Chicago children living in homeless shelters. When I signed up to run I decided that since I was travelling to a city I don't know much about and have only visited for one day previously, I wanted to raise money for a local charity, one that was doing something on the ground and away from the multinational, government financed super charities. I wanted to try and help the people who are bettering and empowering the lives young people growing up today. Increasingly as I watch news and documentaries and read articles it is becoming increasingly apparent that society is becoming more and more marginalised. The gap between rich and poor is increasing and millions of people are being let down and forgotten. For me Hopes for Kids inspires my confidence for a stronger, more inclusive and community minded future in a world which seems to be heading further and further into disparity. We cannot forget that everyone, whoever they are and whatever hand they are dealt is still a human just like us, we all deserve the right to education and the opportunity to better ourselves. The present US administration has moved to slash public funding for charities, dramatically decreasing spending for the people in the US that need it the most. In Chicago alone the number of homeless children is in the tens of thousands, tens of thousands of children who deserve the right to an education and charities like Hopes for Kids can help them to stay in school and give them a fighting chance at life. I will be flying out to the US early to shoot a mini doc on the charity before my run, to lend my skills to their good cause. Please help the homeless children of Chicago by sponsoring my marathon in any way you can. I will be eternally grateful. Rob x
