Provide a Food Stipend for Roberta's Wolf/Beaver Internship
Organized by: Roberta Ryan
Anyone that knows me knows that I've always wanted to work with wildlife, and that I have a particular affinity for wolves. I've been fortunate enough to work on several incredible wildlife projects, but I've never had the chance to handle wild animals in the field. I'll finally get to have that experience this fall during an internship with Voyageurs National Park, where I'll be live-trapping wolves and beavers for research purposes. The internship will start the first week of September 2015, and run through the first week of November. This is a chance to see a life-long dream become a reality, while gaining valuable skills and connections in my profession. It's an experience that will greatly enrich my life, while also broadening scientific knowledge of wolves and beavers. I couldn't have asked for a better opportunity.
The internship is unpaid, and while the Park Service will be able to give me free housing, there is no food stipend available. I've spent the last year volunteering full-time for the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) on various moose projects, with both housing and a grocery account provide. I'm thrilled that I was able to support myself during that period, and the adventures I had made the year without an income worth-while. Unfortunately, I've now exhausted my savings, and being able to cover my own food costs while I'm in Voyageurs will be challenging.
The DNR offered $50-$75 worth of food a week, varying by field season. I was able to eat comfortably with $50 a week for several months, and I'm hoping I'll be able to raise $450 so I can do that again. Your support will be greatly appreciated as I continue to pursue my passions and nurture my budding wildlife career. To show my gratitude, I'll be keeping a blog (likely on Facebook) documenting the experience so I can share the journey that wouldn't be possible without your support. THANK YOU for investing in my future. It will surly be a wild ride.
