I am raising money for the Colorado Cancer Research Program (CCRP Website: http://co-cancerresearch.org/). The CCRP is a non-profit organization that was founded in 1988 located in the Colorado front range, their 120 participating physicians actively progress over 140 clinical trials progressing frontier of cancer research. Their goal is to serve as an NCI Community Oncology Research Program (NCORP), as designated by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), to enable the people to participate in cancer prevention, cancer control, and cancer treatment research through local physicians, community hospitals and clinics.
This fundraiser is part of preparation for the 2016 Race Across America (RAAM). RAAM is a 300 mile bike race across from Oceanside, CA to Annapolis, MD in less than 12 days. I will cross 13 states, climb over 170,000 vertical feet, and sleep less than 20 hours for the entirety of the event.
CCRP has demonstrated a long track record of direct, patient care and outcomes. Right now they are leading groundbreaking clinical trials on a variety of cancers, including; melanoma, lung, breast, and renal.
My connection with the cancer treatment started when I was 4 years old and my mother was diagnosed with stage 3 ovarian cancer. For the following year, our family went through surgery and chemotherapy. My sister and I slept on the floor next to her bed every night. I remember holding her head up in the bathroom as her body rejected her weekly dose of poisonous medicine. It was the first time I felt truly helpless and afraid. Fortunately, my mother beat the odds and survived cancer. She has gone on dedicating her life to helping others fighting cancer through hospital administration and her work with the commission on cancer has revolutionized treatment standards and quality of care metrics. For almost 30 years she has lived an example of a purpose driven life. Over my life many of my friends and family have battled cancer. Prostate, melanoma, liver, lung. Every battle reminds us of our mortality and how short a time we have with each other.
My story is also not unique. Cancer is the second leading cause of death. in 2015 roughly 1,658,370 new cases of cancer were diagnosed and 589,430 died from cancer in the United States. 40% of men and women will be diagnosed with cancer within their lifetime and 95% of us at least know someone who has. Cancer touches everyone and research centers like the CCRP work to advance treatment and preventative measures to both save and extend lives. Please consider donating to support the fight against cancer.
