Sometimes we feel like we are the lucky ones. Our son, Aaron, was raised in a time when Autism had become a common term for most people in America. When he was born very few people knew what Autism was, and their only real reference to someone with Autism was the movie "Rain Man". Wow, times have sure changed!
For years we struggled with finding doctors and therapists who claimed they could help him. We drove to different states, tried a bunch of cool "new" therapies, and learned a lot about our son and ourselves. No one truly knows what they would do for a loved one until a time of need. But Aaron has certainly benefited from everything we have worked through, and we are proud of the young man he has grown to be.
Because of our struggles to find therapists and strategies to help our son, and then the problem we had with getting insurance companies to pay some of the bills, Renee and I joined WAAA. Since we joined WAAA, the strides we have made in getting insurance coverage for people with Autism have been enormous. But our battle has just begun!
As the world becomes more and more populated with people on the Autism Spectrum, more and more people need our help. Our new goals revolve around helping schools and families with Autism understand each other more, and helping families get the resources they need to survive the difficult world of having a child with Autism.
Today we are working on raising funds to help pay for the enormous costs of everything we do here at WAAA. As a Board Member, I can tell you that we are very careful to make sure that we help everyone that we can. We stretch every dollar as far as it can go because every dollar is precious, just like every person on the Autism Spectrum is precious.
We ask that you help us by donating your time, your money, or both to make a difference in the lives of so many people who need it. Our future depends on the generosity of people just like you. Yes, there are organizations who are working on finding cures and causes, but WAAA is the organization who is making a difference in the lives of people who are living with Autism every day. Whether we all know it or not, the lives of families with Autism are better today because of the tireless work of WAAA.
