BENEFITING: Robin Hood
ORGANIZER: Robin Hood
EVENT DATE: Nov 01, 2015
Hi friends & family!
Many of you know about the amazing work Robin Hood does to alleviate poverty in New York, and I've chosen to run 26.2 miles (eek!) for this amazing organization specifically because of the work they do for the 250,000 veterans living in New York.
As most of you know, my brother Rory, found his passion and purpose aligned in his military service. As soon as he could draw, he was drawing Humvees, military tanks and AK-47's (no joke!). It's safe to say he was destined to be a soldier.
Fast forward to his service in Iraq with the Bravo Company; a role that gave him great pride and -I think- deep joy. Welcoming my brother home from Iraq was easily the happiest day of my life. Unfortunately, despite his safe physical return, he was dealing with an emotional battle that- at the time- I had no context for. I've come to learn that most soldiers who return from war zones have intense struggles with PTSD, and few are properly treated. As many of you know, it was only a month after my brother left the Army that his life came to a tragic and abrupt end.
My intention in running this marathon is to raise awareness around Robin Hood's veteran programs, as well as to provoke meaningful conversation regarding how we can better advocate for the destigmatization of PTSD. How can we, as a society, come to see PTSD as a platform from which to launch into Post Traumatic Growth, instead of an incurable psychological condition.
Please take a moment and watch this video, which gives a fuller picture of Robin Hood's work for veterans.
While I will be running in honor of my brother Rory, I am also running for all of the veterans living in this great city. Please know that 100% of every dollar raised will be used for Robin Hood’s relentless fight against poverty. It’s no small thing: to date, Race for Robin Hood has raised nearly $5 million dollars to aid poverty-fighting efforts.
On behalf of my brother and every veteran currently struggling with PTSD, I would be honored if you would support my fundraising efforts.
With love & gratitude,
