On June 18, 2017, I will be running the Rock ‘n’ Roll half marathon in Seattle to raise awareness of and funds for the great work of the Colon Cancer Alliance. In late February just a week before my medical school interview, I took my mom to the ER for severe abdominal pain and constipation. As I interviewed a few days later, she was in the hospital recovering following a large bowel resection. We later learned that my mom has Stage IIa Colon Cancer. Following this experience, I want my friends and family to know that colon cancer is the SECOND leading cause of cancer death, but it is PREVENTABLE through healthy, high-fiber, low-fat diet and regular colon cancer screenings. I want to motivate my friends to remind themselves and their parents to take care of their health and to get their regular breast, colon, and cervical cancer screenings. With the right steps, we can improve our health and reduce our risk of colon cancer substantially. I hope you can help me reach my fundraising goal of $1,500. Thank you for taking the time to read this message!
