THE STORY:

Five days ago, I learned that I have been given a spot in the Three Peaks Challenge, a crazy 50km trail run up and down the three highest peaks in Cape Town, including Table Mountain. The race will take place on Saturday, 5 November, starting at 5am.

I promised myself that if I got a place (only 120 people can participate in the race), I would run the race for a cause. As most of you know, I have been working on an initiative for girls at risk for the last few months. I am running this race to raise money for a fund for girl-initiated and girl-focused projects in South Africa. The fund is called Rock: Girl and has just been set up. My goal for the race is to raise, through individual donations, R10,000 as seed money for the fund. I am sure this can be done - the exchange rate is about R7 to US1 right now. The first project that will be funded is a Safe Spaces campaign in partnership with the city of Cape Town, the South African National Gallery, the Department of Education, South African artists, designers, and government leaders, and girls from previously disadvantaged communities and their families. I am attaching a short description of the project, along with a photo of some of the girls who inspired it.

I hope you can help me by contributing $2, $20, or $200 per kilometer that I complete on Saturday. A South African law firm is finalizing plans for the legal status of the fund now (on a pro bono basis), so if you want to make an online commitment now, then when the fund has secured legal status you can finalize the donation and get a tax deduction for your contribution.
