I started building boats with kids in a junior high school classroom in 1995 -- 22 years ago. Since then, Rocking the Boat has grown from an idea to a full service youth and community development organization. Close to 1,000 young people have learned how to build wooden boats, restore the bronx river, and sail in their own back yard. Along with these hands on experiences, they have benefitted from the support of a team of social workers offering social-emotional support, college and career guidance, post-secondary support, and this year alone -- $150,000 in cash scholarships for college or trade school programs. Most of all, Rocking the Boat has become an extended family for so many of our students and graduates -- a place where they are always welcome and always supported. In 2017, Rocking the Boat is far greater anything I could have dreamed of when I first stepped foot in that classroom in 1994. Just imagine what we can accomplish in the next 22 years. Please join me in our work to improve the lives of young people in the South Bronx.
