Hello and welcome to our fundraising page for Project Purple! Project purple is an offical charity partner for the Denver Rock n' Roll marathon and half marathon with a goal to raise awareness and money for pancreatic cancer. We will be running together as Project Purple team members in the half marathon. Please join us in our race to beat pancreatic cancer!
Pancreatic cancer is a disease that is very near to our hearts. In March of 2014, Phil's dad was diagnosed with stage II pancreatic cancer after months of stomach and chest discomfort, which had been attributed to gastric reflux. It was a huge shock to the entire family. Watching his father endure the chemotherapy was heartbreaking. He was a strong and healthy individual, and we felt helpless. With the chemo, came other complications, such as internal bleeding, and he was in and out of the hospital often. Through it all, hope was never lost, and he vowed to fight with everything he had to gain more time with loved ones. However, at the end of June, his diagnosis was advanced to Stage IV. Less than a week later, we were forced to say goodbye to an incredible man, 3 months after his diagnosis, and 3 months before our wedding in September.
Phil's dad was always a young and healthy individual, at age 50, he did not smoke, rarely drank alcohol, and had no family history of cancer. How could such a devastating illness strike someone like this? This year, the American Cancer Society estimates that approximately 48,000 people in the US will be diagnosed and approximately 40,000 will pass away from it. Stage I pancreatic cancer has a 14% 5-year-survival rate, and Stage IV has a 1% 5-year-survival rate, one of the worst survival rates of all cancers. Please help us change these statistics. We do not want anyone to have to go through what we did. Watching a loved one endure this horrible disease is heart breaking, and having to say goodbye is extremely difficult. Let's make a change for others!
