So all of you receiving this probably know I like to run, to explore, and if possible - get lost while I am running and then run some more. There have always been some unique ways to feed my desire to run throughout the seasons: In the Fall, triathlons with friends and a case of beer on the line for the post-bbq. In the Winter, running up snowy mountains with older cousins and doing push-up down the mountain side while snowboarding. In the Spring, betting friends in the form of liquid encouragement on mile pace during certain races. In the Summer running through the Sierra Nevadas with a good friend in pursuit of the same thing John Muir was chasing after himself over a hundred years ago...the unknown, the adventure, and the joy of being on the journey.
So what am I trying to get after... May 3, 2014, I will be participating in the physical challenge called Rock The Ridge in the Shawangunk Mountains of the Hudson Valley in New York. Rock The Ridge is a 50-mile footrace, and the goal is to complete the distance in 24 hours or less (but I am hoping to complete it before the sun goes down - so I don't have to worry about any mountain cougars!)
There are many people in my life who have taught me the joy of exploring nature: my parents, my cousins in Vermont, friends from college, and some friends who I was meant to meet along the way...
One of my close buddy's, named Johnny, and I have build running traditions over the years -- we started with venturing out around Nova during my frosh year, then it turned into a few half marathons, then the Philly Marathon, then organizing friends to do Triathlons each year, and then connecting once a month to run the wooded trails of Wissahickon Park. Well, now Johnny lives in New Paltz with his wife, Sarah, and his little son, Noah. We always talked about doing an adventure race and this seemed like the perfect time to do it. Johnny will be my coach and motivator to make sure I survive the distance and what better excuse to go visit with great friends for a weekend and spend the day exploring the beautiful "Gunks" mountain range. At the same time, this Rock The Ridge event will be raising money to protect and care for the Mohonk Preserve. The trails I will be running through for 50 miles will ultimately be Noah's (Johnny's son) playground and will probably be the place where his family continues to grow in their love for nature. Connecting with good friends, spending the day running through the mountains, and helping out with a cause will contribute to the protecting the trails and land so that the spirit of adventure may grow within a little boy's wild heart --- are all things I am looking forward to.
I never like asking anyone for money. However, if you are willing to donate, I am just asking for a donation of $5 or $10 to contribute to this great cause and help me reach my goal of $250. I promise that if you make a donation I will run one of the 50 miles thinking about you the whole time!
As always, I appreciate your generosity and support and look forward to sharing stories with you about this 50 mile adventure (that is if I ever make it out of the mountains). Also, please let me know what your upcoming adventures are and how I can support them!
