FINAL UPDATE: $11,225 RAISED FOR VETERANS RECOVERY RESOURCES!!!
November 06, 2017
BENEFITING: Veterans Recovery Resources
EVENT DATE: Nov 04, 2017
In September 2017, I retired from US federal government service with more than 36 years of work in the US Air Force and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Instead of seeking another job, I have decided I will volunteer as much of my time as possible for charitable causes. Through a work colleague, I became aware of Veterans Recovery Resources, a Mobile, Alabama based public charity established by veterans, for veterans. Veterans Recovery Resources' mission is to deliver the highest-quality, compassionate, affordable mental wellness and addiction recovery services to all veterans–and their families–who need help. Veterans Recovery Resources will provide, without discrimination, care for emergency mental health conditions to individuals regardless of their eligibility for financial assistance or for governmental assistance. On November 4, 2017, I will compete in Ironman Florida in Panama City Beach. This race covers 140.6 miles and includes, in order, a 2.4 mile ocean swim, 112 mile bike ride, and 26.2 mile run. The total distance must be covered in no more than 17 hours. In 2015, I competed in Ironman Florida and raised more than $8,000 for another charity. Despite the fact that my body crumbled at mile 127.5, ending my race that year, I found the fundraising experience extremely fulfilling. In 2016, I again competed in Ironman Florida. This time, though, I did not raise money for a charity. I felt like I had to first prove to myself and everyone else that I could actually finish the race. Then, and only then, I believed I could again ask people for support for a charity. That year, I completed the race in 14 hours and 36 minutes. Although thrilled to have finished the event, I discovered the lack of fundraising left me with a somewhat empty feeling. In 2017, I am dedicating my participation in Ironman Florida to all veterans, particularly those in need. I am setting a lofty goal to raise $15,000 for Veterans Recovery Resources. While I welcome encouragement to help me finish the race, I would really appreciate financial support to help our veterans. Please join me in this cause.
