Our interest in Above + Beyond Cancer began when we heard Ruth Bachman*, a cancer survivor, speak at an event about a year ago that was featuring Above and Beyond. The event was sponsored by Drake University’s The Comparison Project*. We were intrigued and challenged by Ruth’s story of the trip – the spiritual aspect, the physical aspect, the mental aspect. As we drove home that night we discussed how much we would like to go to the base camp of Mt. Everest as Ruth had.
Fun how big dreams get birthed, isn’t it? We have always loved the outdoors and find hiking to be a fun and invigorating way to promote our health goals. So, to blend our passion for doing things together as a couple that we love with loving and helping others seemed like a great combination!
Fast forward 12 months later, Dianne was meeting with Dr. Richard Deming, the Founder and Chairman of Above + Beyond Cancer, and discovered the team was going to Machu Picchu this year. We were intrigued, talked about it, talked about it some more and then applied for the adventure! We were thrilled when we heard we were accepted to go!We are going on the trek in honor of Roger’s sister, Rhonda Wheeler, a breast cancer survivor and in memory of Dillon Morris, the son of Dianne’s cousin’s, who died of brain cancer at a young age.
In addition, Dianne recently published the book Stop Breathe Believe, Mindful Living One Thought at a Time* which teaches and inspires others to adapt the practice to stop and mindfully be aware of an unhealthy thought, breathe our way to calm openness, and believe a compassionate truth statement. Dr. Deming has endorsed the book and is hoping to integrate the practice of Stop Breathe Believe® as a team as we encounter various trials and hurdles on the path of the trek. The path of the trek to Machu Picchu is a great metaphor for the trek or path of life we all face, especially during times of hardship such as cancer.
We are so excited to be on this journey. You can be involved. We are planning to take some prayer flags in our backpack like you see in our picture. Roger and Dianne will be taking, (no surprise to all of the Stop Breathe Believe fans) red, yellow and green flags. If you would like to write a prayer or a message in honor of/in memory of someone on one, let us know and we will mail the flag to you and then you can write a message or decorate it. We then will be hanging up the prayer flags each night at camp to honor those individuals featured on the flags.
If you want to be involved in the fight against cancer and help others cancer survivors go on this trip, you are welcome to donate. Proceeds are 100% tax deductible. All money donated here will go to supporting the cancer survivors going on the trip.
