Join our effort to bring more Role Models to more kids in cities everywhere - even $5, $10, $25 can help!  See more

THE STORY:

The Guardian Angels reaches out to kids from pre-school to adulthood through a constellation of programs we call the Role Model Zone (RMZ). We operate a thriving community center, and conduct workshops in schools to deter bullying and violence. We’ve got a proven track record and rising demand, but are limited by a lack of funding. Our goal is to enlist your support to raise $15,000 by April 1 to bring more kids into the zone it cities everywhere. Any donation - even $5, $10, $25 - can help us get there.

Washington Heights Community Center (Started 2003)
The neighborhood is what the center’s director, long-time Guardian Angel Dennis (“SuperStretch”) Torres, calls a “war zone” – streets, subways, and housing complexes riddled with gangs, and plagued by drugs and crime. Youth ages 4 to 17 flock to the sparsely-appointed second floor space, eager to surround themselves with positive role models and productive pastimes - after school, on weekends and during summer vacation. They come for community, homework help, martial arts classes, healthy snacks, games and much more.

School Outreach
In schools, Role Model Program Manager Hashim Garrett, a remarkable 35-year old motivational speaker, shares with young people his firsthand experience with gangs and violence. A victim of senseless street violence; at age 15, Mr. Garrett was shot 6 times, leaving him nearly completely paralyzed from the waist down. He charges students to make good decisions, embrace “positive peer pressure”, and prioritize academics. He teaches them how arguments, substance abuse, gangs, and bullying are linked to violence. He urges them to learn to “let it go,” which can free them to contribute positively to their communities.

The challenge? The Guardian Angels is faced with fewer grant opportunities and donations in these challenging economic times. Please donate and help us keep kids out of harm’s way.
