What is Fragile X Syndrome?
Fragile X Syndrome is a genetic mutation that causes a range of cognitive, intellectual, and physical disorders, developmental delays, and disabilities across a spectrum. It manifests similarly with autism (and is in fact the main genetic cause of autism, though it's certainly not the only cause of autism). However, because it's a spectrum disorder, not all cases of FXS will be identical to another.
The mutated gene rides on the X chromosome, and can be passed on by either parent. Girls are statistically less affected than boys. There is no currently known cure.
What is Let ‘Em Know?
Let 'Em Know is National Fragile X Foundation’s Awareness Day event to raise awareness for Fragile X!
It's set up as a virtual run/walk to help raise awareness and funds for Fragile X research and support from anywhere in the world!
It isn’t about how fast or slow you are. It’s about what you can do to raise awareness and “Let ’Em Know!”
What I'm Doing
I'm running the Let 'Em Know event in conjunction with a sanctioned 5K on July 26, 2014. The race is SterlingFAST, held in conjunction with Sterling Heights' annual SterlingFest city fair.
