WHY I AM RUNNING-
I have lived in the building where RMH Boston Harbor (formerly Home Away Boston) operates for almost seven years. During that time my family and I have participated in fundraising and community events with visiting families, which have allowed me the opportunity to meet the STRONGEST, MOST OPTIMISTIC and DETERMINED children and family members who face adversity I cannot fathom all while keeping smiles on their faces. I'm not a stranger to the strength of such families as I come from a family affected by childhood cancer and am awe struck with how resilient my mother, her siblings and her parents are/were after enduring what they did-- smiles and laughter are abundant! It's because of these smiles from the families with whom I live and from my mother's family that I am motivated to run my first ever marathon to help raise money for the families who keep smiling and fighting amidst life's greatest challenges.
I love the quote by author Ian Maclaren, "Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle." In my building, I most often run into neighbors who are enduring life's daily battles; these are the battles that a smile and chit chat can often help ease the burden. But sometimes I share an elevator with a family who is arriving home from a hospital after hours or days of treatment. While a smile and some chit chat can ease the burden momentarily, these families are truly fighting hard battles and need more than smiles and hellos from a neighbor. Thankully, due to the amazing RMH Boston Harbor (formerly Home Away Boston) organization, they have apartments to go to for a "home away from home". That's why this fundraising event is so critical; families fighting the hardest battles need these opportunities to go "home". I want to do more than smile and chit chat and want to help provide more families the opportunity to experience RMH Boston Harbor. Don't you, too?! Please help me raise $10,000 for this great organization.

RMH Boston Harbor leases and operates apartments for the purpose of providing “homes-away-from-home” to families with critically ill children while they are undergoing treatment at Massachusetts General Hospital. Families travel from all over the world to receive treatment at MGH, often leaving behind family and friends to seek out the medical care which they feel will give their child the best chance at survival. When families make the decision to travel for medical care, they must find solutions to three major questions:
Where will we find a comfortable, family-friendly place to stay?
How will we afford this place for six weeks or longer?
Who will help us to find our way around this new, strange city?
RMH Boston Harbor successfully answers each of these questions by providing private, one-bedroom apartments in the peaceful Charlestown Navy Yard neighborhood. Not only do we give families a comfortable, family-friendly place to stay, but we also ensure the apartments are fully stocked with groceries, cleaning supplies, toiletries, linens, housewares, toys, and games prior to the arrival of each guest family. Additionally, we host weekly events in our Community Space to help families make new friends that will help them find their way around the city of Boston.
And the best part is: all of this is provided at no cost to the families who stay with us.
Each apartment costs RMH Boston Harbor roughly $150 per night to lease and operate. This amount includes the cost of rent, utilities, cleaning, cable, wifi, and a telephone, as well as the expenses incurred by keeping the units furnished and stocked with food and games, and the cost of hosting activities for our guests to enjoy together.
Please help us raise $75,000 to ensure that families can continue to reveive the support they need while their child is receiving the critcal medical care they deserve.
