I am running with the 2016 NYC Half Marathon Project Purple Team next March to run for the people who are not able or do not have the chance to. This is a way to show my support by not only physically participating but emotionally as well. This is also a great opportunity to challenge myself both physically and mentally while supporting a good cause. I am thrilled to be able to be part of such a great event and to meet so many people.
I am running in memory of my wife's grandfather Daniel Dillard ( October 13, 1940 - July 16, 2010 ) Mr. Dillard lost his battled to colorectal Cancer ( Colon ) after 3 months of being diagnosed with it. It hit her family really hard but also brought them together. Most colorectal cancer occurs due to lifestyle and increasing age with only a minority of cases associated with underlying genetic disorders. It typically starts in the lining of the bowel and if left untreated, can grow into the muscle layers underneath, and then through the bowel wall. Screening is effective at decreasing the chance of dying from colorectal cancer and is recommended starting at the age of 50 and continuing until a person is 75 years old.
As any person with cancer knows, a cancer diagnosis also affects your family members and friends. Sometimes, the complex feelings and lifestyle changes caused by cancer and its treatment become as overwhelming for family members and friends as they are for you. Understanding the potential changes in the way you relate to specific family members and friends and in the way they relate to you may help you take steps to foster healthy, mutually supportive relationships during this challenging time.
Here is some information on the 3 main programs that your donation efforts will support:
1. Scholarship Program – we provide scholarships to children and grandchildren that have lost a loved one to Pancreatic Cancer or have a loved one fighting. Candidates have to be either enrolled currently in college or high school senior. We provide small scholarships to help and give hope to continue their higher education.
2. Patient Financial Aid Program – we provide families fighting PC with financial aid to help pay the every day bills. Examples maybe rent, mortgage, car, utilities, food and anything else associated with everyday living so families can focus on fighting then worrying about paying these bills.
3. Research for a cure, early detection test or improving the quality of life – we provide funding for research projects that show promise in finding a cure, early detection test or improving the quality of life for people with Pancreatic Cancer.
The Marine Corps Marathon is one of the fastest growing road races in the country and it sold out in less than 2 hours last year and they were now forced to go to a lottery entry this year. Called “The People’s Marathon” I am excited to be part of the charity program and to be able to honor Mr. Dilliard the best way I can.
